Coming up we have a fairly heavy calendar, and I am sure members will respond and asist those who have put their hands up to organise Orienteering and Social events on behalf of the club.

It’s hard work – you know! Aka Stephen Collins and Steve Bird The perfect alibi, if you need one!The beauty of Orienteering as a complete sport is illustrated in the two stories below. It gives you a reason to travel and explore other areas, states and countries, not that many orienteers seem to need an excuse. Apart from going to WA for the OZ Champs, BK members have also travelled to Kazachstan and Brazil. Bruce Paterson-Ewen and Janelle Templeton went to Kazachstan to compete in the Region One World ARDF (Radio direction finding) Championships. Their stories of their experiences indicate that this part of the world still presents as a unique area, still heavily influenced by its Russian heritage. Janet and Matt King have gone to Brazil for the World Masters O Champs, with a few side trips planned including a trip to the Galapagos.

Australian ChampionshipsTeam BKThe BK contingent at the Australian Champs Carnival (in WA) comprised Helen Alexander, Stephen Bird, Nich Collins, Peter Collins, Stephen Collins, Henk De Jong, Murray Hanna, Liz Hatley, Tim Hatley, Judi Herkes, Martin Kozma, Philippa Lohmeyer-Collins, Bruce Paterson, Ewen Templeton, Janelle Templeton, Jenny Sheahan and John Sheahan. Apart from day one (the WA Long Distance Champs), which was rather damp, the rest of the carnival had terrific weather. This coupled with good maps and lovely terrain made for a most enjoyable carnival.

BK members chalked up some very good results, as listed below. In the WA Long Dist Helen Alexander earnt a 2nd place in the W75’s, while Liz Hatley scored a 3rd place in the W55A/S. In the Aust Middle Dist Judi Herkes-Peter Collins-Helen Alexander and Tim Hatley all came first in their respective classes. A Great effort! In the Aust Sprint Champs Peter Collins came 1st in 20A, while Helen Alexander and Tim Hatley placed 2nd and John Sheahan came home in 3rd place in M75. The Aust Long Dist saw Peter Collins 1st in M20A, while Helen Alexander and Judi Herkes placed 3rd in their respective classes. The Relay Champs had Judi Herkes in the winning Womens team, while Tim Hatley and Bruce Paterson were in a team that placed 2nd. In the two mid week events Ewen Templeton, Tim Hatley, Jenny Sheahan and Judi Herkes all had good results. The champs saw the emergence of Nicholas Collins as a very promising Elite Orienteer, with two impressive runs, placing him consistently above the middle of the field. Quite an achievement. Peter Collins also put his stamp as an orienteer with three first placings in the M20A category. This carnival was a first for Martin Kozma, who handled the courses with a considerable skill, showing a steady improvement in ability in his relatively short O career. Oct 18: BK and YV are co-organising the first of the ‘Sprint into Spring’ series at Newport Lakes. Come and try the newly drawn colour map of this unique area. Oct 19: Inter Club relays near Chewton, with the BK teams organised by Greg Tamblyn. Nov 7 & 8: BK and Albury Wodonga are co-presenting the Vic MTBO champs at Stanley and Eldorado. Nov 30: BK is organising the Vic Sprint Champs at Deakin Uni. Geelong. This is a newly drawn map. There will be two events held on the Sunday. One before and the other after lunch. Dec 13: BK Christmas break up. Late afternoon. Offers gladly accepted of a house and garden for our social gathering.
