MelBushO: Good Fun and only a short drive

Sunday, 22 May 2016

It's hard to see how anyone could be complaining about the fantastic sunny and mild weather we are enjoying presently.

Today's MelBushO event at Eaglemont Flats drew nearly 190 competitors. Apart from the scenery and the pleasure of competing in the said glorious weather, Susannah from Melbourne Forest Racers provided enough challenges for all classes of orienteers and it was fantastic to see lots of parents out with their young children "hunting" for controls. It was also nice to get there and back in only 20 min from home.

I really hope the family cap of $25 per family is encouraging the occasional orienteers to come out on Sunday mornings. Entry fees are very reasonable and the map reading and landform reading skills that the kids get taught/learn through experience are most useful in not just orienteering but in everyday life.

From scanning the results (just posted on Eventor at 2.20pm) it seems the percentage of mispunches was higher than average, course 1 (4% of competitors); course 2 (12.5%), course 3 (6.5%) and course 4 (10%). It really pays to check that the control number in the table printed on your map or on your wrist slip matches up with number on the control you are about to punch.

If you desperately wanted to come today, but had other commitments don't worry there's another MelBushO event at Yarra Bend Park on 5th June.
